If you don't feel like reading the whole post, here is my question summed up:
Is horse poo that is not aged for more than a couple of weeks and probably hasn't been rained on, but that is totally 100% dry and not green inside okay to use?

Whole post, if you want the whole story:

I just recently was able to acquire some horse manure. After contacting countless stables, I finally found one that had some manure available that was free of wood chips...in the field, haha.

In other words, all the other stables told me that they had no manure available that did not have wood chips in it. The one that told me that they had some available that was free of wood chips, was in a pile outside, as they too used woodchips in the manure piles they had inside & in the back of the barn.

Upon arrival to the stable, I was pointed to a very small area inside the field. These people keep their stable in tip-top shape, and everything was nice, neat & tidy. The small area inside the field had a relatively small pile of manure...probably 15' x 10' in size and the manure was pretty level in this sectioned off area.

I asked how old it was, and I was told that it wasn't very old at all, NEARLY fresh, but not actually fresh. It has been very sunny & totally dry here for the past couple of weeks, and what was in the pile was BONE DRY, but I don't think it had ever been rained on. Breaking open a couple of nuggets, it wasn't green or anything, and as I said, totally dry. It had a grasslike odor, odd, but not terribly unpleasant or anything. After examining the poo for a minute, I said "I'll take it" (not all of it obviously).

I haven't had to go on a manure run in a very long time, and the last time I did I got myself some well aged firefang covered manure, so there was no question in my mind it was A-Okay to use. But now, I'm a little unsure, as I'm far from a manure connoisseur.

Anyway, my question is this, summed up:

Is horse poo that is not aged for more than a couple of weeks and probably hasn't been rained on, but that is totally 100% dry and not green inside okay to use?

As long as it doesn't give off an ammonia smell, it should be ok. You can always take the fresh stuff and leave t in the sun o a tarp for a couple days. Always worked well for me.

Hell yea its good to use!! I use fresh warm right out of the horses butt if I can lol, I dont want the rained on poop, I want the freshies so none of the good stuff gets washed away, as long as its bone dry your fine, any ammonia would have already evaporated if its bone dry, especially if it was dried in the sun I say use it bro. I have used Hpoo that was shat out the very day I picked it up, I just dried it out bone dry and bang bang, good to go I got maaad fruits from the sub I used it in. peace

What's wrong with horse poo with ammonia smell?
Isn't the ammonia smell a indicator of firefang; a beneficial bacteria?

Anyway, I've used plenty of just "dry," un-aged cow and horse poo, you should be alright.

The ammonia smell is from the urine in the manure. This is the ammonia that you want gone.

Sorry bro but this is a little of the mark.

The best manure is "fresh" but field aged. The best of the best is 3-4 months old and has been rained on quite a bit.

As a rule of thumb green is bad, brown is good.

The thing about manure is you want it to be leeched. If it has never been rained on it isn't leeched.

Don't get me wrong you can definitely use the really fresh stuff, even green and see good results.

I bet you 100 pounds of manure if you rinse green shit out and grow off of it right next to poo that has been aged 3-4 months with the same culture the one with a couple months of aging under its belt will blow the green shit away.

Don't over analyze what I was saying bro. It will still work. I'm just saying the 'pale' stuff tends to work a little better.

If it is literally green and just fell out of the horses rear it tends to not work quite as well....... At least from my experience anyway.

yeah that is pretty green, the stuff i usually get has sat for a month or more probably, i run one of those flimsy metal leaf rakes loosely over the surface and anything that is light enough to be raked up is what goes in the bag. most times it is already broken down into shreds by the horses hooves and a bucketful of nuggets

^^ DO you know how much time I would have saved drying out hpoo if I would have grabbed the more aged stuff? At least I know now, thanks for this thread
