"Seeking the Magic Mushroom" is a 1957 photo essay by amateur mycologist Robert Gordon Wasson describing his experience taking psilocybin mushrooms in 1955, with curandera Maria Sabina, during a Mazatec ritual in Oaxaca, Mexico. Wasson was one of the first Westerners to participate in a Mazatec ceremony and to describe the psychoactive effects of the Psilocybe species. This essay was first printed in TIME magazine. Wasson is widely known as the father of ethnomycology.
This was originally published in 1957 and was co-written with Wassons wife Valentina. Its a HUGE two volume set covering Mushrooms in history, folk customs and folklore, diet, and culture in various European countries. Wassons wife was a Russian who was raised in a Baltic country so there is an emphasis on Mushroom culture in Russia in this.
