I think some of the issue with why the author had issues with Chicken of the Wood on one occasion and not another may be the medium it was growing. "SULPHUR SHELF MUSHROOMS GROWING ON ANY CONIFER TREE (PINE, HEMLOCK, SPRUCE, FIR, LARCH/TAMARACK, ETC.), EUCALYPTUS, OR LOCUST TREES SHOULD NOT BE EATEN! " http://americanmushrooms.com/edibles4.htm
Stalking the Edible Wild Mushroom
a decent set of field guides can cost over $100. But since a pound of wild mushrooms costs $18-35 in the store and you can often find that much in an hour, I think it's a worthwhile invest.
