this is my first attemt at agar, I swabbed these plates almost 2 weeks ago. does the mycelium look usable? I'm not sure when to make the first transfer. Should I let this grow out more or transfer agar to agar now? Screenshot_20200727-171556_Gallery.jpg

I don’t know if u saw my post on shout space .pdais often wispy so u are good there imo.But it looks like u have some color and a bacterial blotch that’s no good .i would take some samples away from the bad spots soon .andone dish I would soak the transfers in 3% hydrogen peroxide.it will slow the growth down but should help knock out any spores are bacteria from riding along .it won’t kill molds are mycelium so if u get unwanted growth transfer till it’s clean .good luck .feel free to ask any questions.

How did they take off really fast ? that was a dirty swab but I have cleaned up worse .if u live in a state that we’re ordering spores is legal might want to order from a cleaner vendor .depending on how much time u want to spend on the agar work.Im self taught so that’s just my opinion.

Ordered from a pretty reliable source, most likely contams were from my inexperienced work. just made the first transfer. Still fumbled around a little too much tho. But if they keep transferring using sterile technique it should clean up right?

i wouldn't take from any of those plates. how long have those plates been growing since you swabbed them? are you working in a still air box? do you wear a face mask, gloves, sleeves while working in, if it is, the still air box?

When taking agar to apply to more agar i would suggest taking from the leading edge of mycelial growth that is not near other growth. depending on how long those plates were incubating you may have not transferred the mycelium that you wanted to the new plates.

about 2 weeks. yes, still air box, gloves, flame etc. I will keep in mind about the leading edge in the future.
