I purchased a few bales of wheat straw from my local farmers co-op. I chopped it up by running over it a number of times with a lawnmower. I then lime pasteurize it for 24 hours before inoculated it with pink oyster grain spawn and placing in a 5-gallon bucket. The wheat straw must’ve had some wheat seed in the straw for now I am having green wheat sprouts growing in my 5-gallon bucket. Any suggestions, short of steam pasteurization, as I move forward towards my next batch of 5-gallon buckets.
I just had some in a cube tub grow like that didn’t seem to hurt anything .short of steaming it it will pop up .i have found if u shake it the seed seems to go to the bottom. If u toss the last bit in the compost it doesn’t happen as much. But it doesn’t seem to raise tam levels .
U can do a water compost but I heard it smells something awful .!and composting would kill the seed but not sure how it would work in oyster growing .make sure you are getting straw not hay and look for seed heads to pick out some of my best grows had sprouts tho .
I have three hundred bushels of Durham laying in my backyard the pheasants have been eaten the crap out of it I'm still going to use it for spawn maybe in the fall
Hell my last cube mono had sprouts everywhere sleep was joking that I was coming up with a new tec.lol
Seems we need to name it @Nihidao! I had popcorn sprout and contam but that was a spawn jar... if anything it should help air flow with oyster as they like lots of FAE right...?
