So I have seen several videos on popcorn tek and decided to give it a try. I have 3 jars with some orrissa agar in them and 2 have begun to show signs of mycelium growth.

Anyone else done this? What are the pro's and cons?

    Thanks

I have used popcorn many times in the past. It's probably been at least 10 years though haha.

Popcorn has always worked out well for grain spawn as long as the hydration is correct. If you have too much pooling water you run a higher risk of bacteria blooms or other contamination taking hold. This parameter applies to any grain though and bulk substrate as well.

Soggy and Oversaturated = Yikes! This is gonna be a close one!

I know popcorn isn't nearly as nutrient rich as some other grains but it gets the job done for spawning to bulk.

--> One tip I would give is to give your spawn plenty of time to colonize and completely consolidate before using. You don't want kernels with uncolonized and exposed surface area.

    Look forward to some pictures!:aweshift:

A couple of days after inoculation. I had 2 pieces of tape over the hole and did not like the speed of growth so I removed one. Growing faster now.

Popcorn jars went into the trash this morning. I was looking at them before I left for work and all 3 had mold growing. Well shit

Do you think taking of one layer of tape is the cuase? Or is it hard to know?

no I think it was the fact that they didn't get a proper sterilization. Could have also been over saturated..

Hey bro, if you haven't tried them before I highly recommend injection port lids. They are pretty simple to make, just takes about 20 or 30 minutes to prep a couple dozen and put RTV silicone over the injection port holes.

I won't ever grow without them. They make inoculation so simple. You don't even need an SAB or flow hood really. Just wipe with Isopropyl alcohol, flame sterilize your syringe needle and inject. I use a still-air-box anyway for added control but it's not really necessary if you can do inoculations in one smooth motion.
