Hey! SUPER New to mycology, I'm trying to use the popcorn tek but am worried that I have failed. I did not use a PC (I will next time thinking of switching to BRF), my jars have been sitting for about 5 days now and while I don't see any mycelium growth (I think) I do see very tiny black spots and what looks like spiders web starting out from the popcorn. Not sure if this is contamination and I should throw it out or if this is the start of mycelium growth and the black spots are spores?

Looks contaminated to me. Grains/popcorn need to be pressure cooked. I personally wouldn't even attempt bed cakes withought a pc

Thanks so much! I did actually manage to get growth with one of my jars surprisingly very small amount, I used 5 jars only growth in two obviously contamination in one could there be any reason why there is no growth of any kind in the other 3? I have also just inoculated some Uncle Ben's Rice to try that method as an experiment.

Well, you said you didn't pressure cook, did you sterilize them at all? Chances are there is too much contamination for it to even start growing. Also Burst corn kernals like that will always bring issues.

Okay, so a bit of excitement here... not too much but a lot for me on my first grow! The one jar I had a little bit of growth it has doubled in size growing very slowly but so far no signs of contamination, I think.

I've found for whatever reason I get faster growth on corn than rye..
