I am a newbie. My first liquid culture is showing some growth, but I do not know when it is ready to use. I can't wait to inoculate my first grain to see how it works out.

From a different web page I found the following.
Signs of growth after one week max, and fully done at week 3 max. Some see growth in under a day and fully done in 3. Once growth has slowed down (done), either use immediately or store in a fridge.

How much growth is required to be ready to inoculate grain?

Hello and welcome! I would say wait a good 7 to 10 days to get a nice glob of mycelium built up... tried to use a LC after 3 days and it didnt colonize fast enough. Most people recommend a nice quarter size glob... have you been swirling it to break the mycelium apart that will increase growth rate?

Yes I swirl it 1 -3 time a say. Lots of small mycelium that probably totals a quarter size. I think I will try it the PM, this will give it 8 hours more to grow. Since I have lots of LC (250 ml) and I am only inoculating 2 quart jars of grain I think I will use 10 ml per jar. Is that too much?

Yes 10ml syringe would way over saturate your spawn jar. It's only 1ml to 4ml. If you have 4 holes to knock do 1 ml per hole and save rest of syringe... if you have agar do syringe to agar and make sure your culture is clean. I just did my first agar its was actually pretty fun!

It will be way too wet and contam out most likely... I have heard it's better to have what a noobie would think is too dry as the mycelium colonizes it will produce heat and moisture. Plus using more then 4ml of any culture is not really beneficial and you can save the syringe for up to a year if stored properly.

Also what kind of grains you using?

LC takes time. 2 or 3 weeks for full growth. U wanna use a marble to help break up the mycelium and a magnetic stir plate helps too. Agar is far easier in my opinion, but if u can make a clean liquid culture it will colonize grain alot faster.
